High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is a procedure that is being performed in Europe and appears to be an option for lower Gleason score prostate cancers and for local recurrence of prostate cancer after external beam radiation therapy. The procedure is performed by inserting a probe into the rectum. The probe delivers highly focused ultrasound to the prostate.
