The two are generally separate. The private life unfolds largely in silence and most directly a¤ects members of the university community.
Mother’s best friend in our neighborhood was the local schoolteacher, Miss Elba. The school was the traditional one-room brick schoolhouse at the end of a lane leading up the side of Mt. Penn and covered by a canopy of trees that admitted no sunlight—scary to a child and thus given the name Spook Lane. Miss Elba taught us from the ﬁnal edition of McGu¤y’s Readers—the best textbooks ever. It was hard not to skip the ﬁfth grade, because by that time we had already sat there listening to that year’s assignments four times over.
Among other things, I brought in guest lecturers from industry and labor to present their views directly. The students were tough in their questions, and industry leaders would tell me how anti-industry they were and labor leaders how anti-labor. I would tell them both that the students had sharp, inquiring minds and were fearless in asking questions even in such a large class. And they were. One of those outside lecturers was Boris Shiskin, the nationwide research director for the AFL-CIO. I would leave the back doors into the amphitheater open to let fresh air circulate to all those students, and a whole pack of the many campus dogs shared the platform with me.
